Students will first explore how TikTok and Youtube algorithms can recommend videos which purposefully push radical views, from misogyny to extreme religion and more, to people who did not intentionally search for such content, and discover how people can fall down radical rabbit-holes. They will examine the 'frog in a pot' analogy to show how extremist views can take such a stronghold on people. Students will then explore the political spectrum to discover what we mean when we talk about far right, far left and religious extremism, comparing these to sensible left of centre, right of centre and moderate religious views. Using this guide, students will then examine real-life quotes from TikTok and assess whether the quotes would be classed as moderate and sensible views, or are in fact extreme. There are many more quotes than shown in the preview, so teachers can pick and choose which they use according to the suitability for their classes.
